Frequently Asked Questions
What is Start Living Healthy @ Work?
Start Living Healthy @ Work is a collaborative partnership between the State Dept. of Health Healthy Hawaii Initiative, Hawaii Medical Services Association (HMSA), Kaiser Permanente, HMA and your employer to provide you and your co-workers with the opportunity to take advantage of the health assessment services that are provided through your healthcare provider, at no cost to you.
How long will the Start Living Healthy @ Work HRA Campaign last?
The Hawaii County pilot is scheduled for January 11, 2010 through February 19, 2010, and it will run annually.
Why should I take a health risk assessment?
The way you live can make a difference in how often you get sick and how long you live. The top four causes of death are all related to health factors that you can do something about: smoking, poor nutrition, lack of physical activity and excessive drinking of alcohol. With an HRA, you can find out if there are changes you can make to feel better and live longer. You will also learn how choices that you make every day can affect your health – now and in the future. You can then make a plan, on your own or with the support of your health care provider, to address these risks and make choices that can improve your health. Your customized HRA also provides a link between you and the services your healthcare provider currently provides.
Why is my employer asking me to take a health risk assessment?
Your employer sees the value of having a workforce that is healthy. Additionally, an employee that is healthy is more likely to have a better quality of life. Both public and private employers consider HRAs as the standard way of measuring employees’ health, and use them to create policies to maintain and improve employees’ health.
Chronic disease, including cancer, heart disease, lower respiratory disease, and diabetes, account for 70% of all deaths and 40% of health care spending in the United States. Yet, these diseases are largely preventable by eating healthy and getting regular exercise, or manageable if detected early through preventive screenings. If you take a health risk assessment and begin making changes to improve your health, everyone wins. You’ll win because you’ll feel better, your employer will win because employees who are healthier are more productive, and we all win if we can put the brakes on health care spending.
How long will it take me to complete the health risk assessment?
It will take about 20 - 30 minutes.
How often do I complete a health risk assessment?
We encourage you to take an HRA once every year.
Is there a cost to complete the HRA?
No. It is free. Both the electronic and paper versions of the HRA are being offered to HMSA and Kaiser Permanente recipients participating in the Hawaii County pilot project at no cost. You are encouraged to take the HRA online because after completing the online questionnaire you will instantly receive your personalized health report.

Will my employer know if I completed the HRA?
No, not unless you tell your employer. Only you and your health plan know if you completed the HRA. Start Living Healthy @ Work will track the number, but not the identity, of employees who complete the HRA.
Who has access to my health risk assessment information?
You are the only person, outside of your health plan, with access to this information. You choose who to share it with.
The information you provide in the HRA remains with your health plan. Similar to your other health information, your health plan must keep your HRA information personal as required by the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). If you report health conditions that call for follow-up, your health plan may contact you to offer you assistance in managing those conditions.

What will be done with my answers to the HRA?
As an employer, the State will only see a broad picture of employees’ health as a group, assuring anonymity of individuals. This information will help the Hawaii Worksite Wellness coordinators identify the group’s major health risks, such as lack of physical activity, and provide evidence-based programs to address the risks.
