Live Tobacco Free at School PDF Print E-mail

On May 25, 2004 all Hawai‘i public schools and public school events became totally tobacco-free (Act 87, HRS § 8-31-3).  According to Act 87 this law applies to:

  1. Students
  2. School employees
  3. Parents
  4. School visitors & guests
  5. Anyone attending non-school activities on public school campuses
  6. Anyone attending school sponsored events held off campus
  7. Anyone in school vehicles

Why is this law important?  Secondhand smoke….

  1. Is harmful to students, staff, and visitor
  2. Causes asthma attacks, bronchitis, pneumonia, middle ear infections& chronic respiratory symptoms

Please support tobacco free schools….

  • By reminding anyone who smokes or uses tobacco on campus about the law
  • Ask them to keep our schools healthy by not smoking or using tobacco at any school activity on or off campus
  • We can set a positive example for students by not smoking in schools
  • If someone continues to resist, stay calm.  Be polite.  Report the incident to the school administrator
  • Thinking about quitting?  Stop smoking information is available on line at:  www.health.gov/health
