Smoke-free Apartments, Condominiums, and Multi-unit Dwellings:

Secondhand smoke seeping into apartments or condominiums from neighboring units poses a health risk and a significant nuisance.   Unfortunately, there are no fail-proof solutions to this problem.  Since personal dwellings are not considered public spaces, they are generally not covered under existing legislation regulating smoking in public places, though some municipalities may restrict or prohibit smoking in common areas.  Act 295, Hawai‘i’s Smoke-free Law, prohibits smoking in lobbies, hallways, and other common areas in apartment buildings, condominiums, and multi-unit dwellings.

Not In Mama's House:

• Since 2004, The Tobacco-Free Kauai Coalition has been implementing a project called Not In Mama's House.
• Not in Mama's House urges family members to take a pledge to make their homes and automobiles smoke-free for the sake of their children.
• The project has received more than 2,000 pledges island wide through outreach at public events.
